Rugby analytics tools compared

Rugby analytics tools do different jobs. Some measure movement with wearable GPS, some are built around video, and some manage athlete information such as availability and wellness. This page lists what each company says it does, on its own website, so you can see where each one focuses.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • What decision are you trying to make? Training load, match review, selection, injury management and player development each point to a different kind of tool.
  • Who will use it every week? A tool that needs a full-time analyst will not suit a volunteer coaching staff, and a tool with no depth may not suit a full-time programme.
  • What hardware does it need? The table shows which tools rely on their own devices or cameras. Hardware brings cost and logistics, and it also brings kinds of data that a phone cannot give you.
  • How is player data protected? Ask how consent is recorded, particularly for players under 18, who can see health information, and what happens to the data if you leave.
  • Can it work without a signal? Many grounds have poor reception, so check whether recording and reviewing still work offline.

Where RugbyMetrics fits

RugbyMetrics is in early access. Today it covers squad management with consent, sideline match tagging that works offline, match metrics, player match reports and season trends, and a team dashboard with availability and daily wellness check-ins. It does not need its own hardware: a phone on the sideline is enough to start. Other data sources, such as video and GPS, are planned and are not available yet.

That makes it a fit for teams that want the match-action side covered quickly, with or without other tools alongside it. If you already use GPS or video, nothing here asks you to replace it.

How to read this table

The tools are not direct substitutes for one another. A team can use GPS monitoring for training load, video for review, an athlete management system for medical and wellness records, and a simple tagging tool for match actions, and they answer different questions. Which combination suits you depends on your level, your staff and your budget.

If you are starting from nothing, our guide to rugby analytics without GPS vests explains what you can measure with a phone on the sideline.
